This October, book lovers from across Auckland's North Shore will have the chance to do exactly that when the 2026 Rotary Kaipātiki Charity Book Fair returns to Northcote College Hall from 1 to 3 October.
Organised by Rotary Kaipātiki in partnership with Multiple Sclerosis Auckland, the popular annual fundraiser transforms Northcote College hall into a treasure trove of thousands of pre-loved books, offering everything from best-selling fiction and biographies to cookbooks, children's favourites and hidden literary gems.
This year's theme, "Need to Read", celebrates the enduring appeal of the printed page. While technology connects us in countless ways, there is still something special about opening a book and being transported somewhere entirely different. Books entertain, educate, inspire and challenge us, all without a battery charger in sight.
The fair has become a much-loved destination for families, avid readers and bargain hunters alike. For many, the attraction lies in the thrill of discovery; the joy of spotting a childhood favourite, stumbling across an unfamiliar author, or finding the perfect title you weren't looking for but just can't leave behind. Tables will be packed with reading material for every age and interest.
The event also embodies the values of sustainability and community. Every donated book is given a new life, finding its way into the hands of another reader rather than gathering dust on a shelf. Behind the scenes, an army of volunteers works tirelessly to make it happen. Rotary Kaipātiki members, supporters of Multiple Sclerosis Auckland, Northcote College staff and community volunteers spend weeks collecting, sorting and organising thousands of books ahead of opening day. Their efforts create one of the North Shore's most anticipated fundraising events, bringing people together while supporting worthwhile causes. Every purchase makes a difference, with proceeds from the Book Fair helping fund the community and charitable work of both Rotary Kaipātiki and Multiple Sclerosis Auckland, and supporting local initiatives and services for people living with multiple sclerosis and related neurological conditions.
