Phoenix Theatre hosted a special celebration on Tuesday 11 August at The PumpHouse, marking exactly 50 years since Sir Roger Hall’s landmark play 'Glide Time' premiered at Wellington’s Circa Theatre. Nearly 200 guests enjoyed a wonderful evening of tributes, a Q&A with Sir Roger, and a sneak peek preview of 'Glide Time', which returns to the stage this September. First staged in 1976, 'Glide Time' became an instant success, selling out and later inspiring the iconic television sitcom 'Gliding On'. Over five decades, Sir Roger has become New Zealand’s most prolific playwright, writing more than 40 plays and earning numerous honours, including a knighthood for services to theatre. It was a night of celebration for the theatre-loving community, and a fitting tribute to a playwright whose sharp observations of Kiwi life continue to entertain audiences across generations.
